🌮 PhĂș Quốc, Vietnam: Paradise With Perspective (Our Honest Review)

PhĂș Quốc is beautiful — but more complex than the postcards. From Grand World to the safari, starfish beaches to wartime history, here’s our honest take on Vietnam’s island paradise in transition.

Where We Stayed: The Grand Wyndham (North Island)

PhĂș Quốc is one of those places that looks like a screensaver — coconut trees bending toward turquoise water, sunsets made of every warm color imaginable, resorts that seem to float above the sea.

And yes, it really is beautiful.
But beauty alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

This isn’t a love letter or a warning — it’s simply the truth of what we experienced on Vietnam’s largest island: the good, the complicated, and the parts that surprised us.

We stayed at the Grand Wyndham on the north side — and before we go further, let’s be clear:

It wasn’t “amazing”
It wasn’t “terrible”
It was exactly what it is — a resort built almost entirely around serving families visiting Grand World.

Meaning:

  • It’s busy

  • It’s loud

  • It’s full of kids from all over the world splashing, running, melting down, and living their best lives

  • And the energy is
 well, resort energy

It offers both an all-inclusive package and a hotel-only rate.
We chose hotel-only, knowing we’d be out exploring more than we’d ever sit at a buffet.

We did try the buffet twice — once for breakfast, once for lunch.
Both were fine.
Not remarkable, not disappointing.
Just
 resort buffet food.

What made the location worth it was convenience.
From the Grand Wyndham, we could easily reach:

  • 🌅 Grand World’s canal, night shows & neon cityscape

  • đŸŸ The Vinpearl Safari (which we loved)

  • đŸ–ïž Northern beaches

  • 🎡 The enormous waterpark + cable car area (we didn’t go, but it’s clearly a hit with families)

You could spend a full week here and never run out of things to do — especially with younger kids.

The Island Itself: The Pros & The Reality

PhĂș Quốc has some truly gorgeous areas — but like most places growing faster than they can manage, it also has challenges.

☀ What We Loved

  • Stunning beaches when you find the right ones

  • The safari — surprisingly fun and well organized

  • Grand World at night — bright, colorful, full of energy

  • The affordability (especially compared to a U.S. family vacation)

  • The food — fresh, flavorful, and a great mix of Vietnamese + international options

đŸŒ§ïž What We Noticed

  • Construction everywhere — resorts, roads, new developments

  • Tourism growing faster than infrastructure — and you can feel the strain

  • Service and warmth aren’t as naturally present as in Da Nang
(Da Nang has set the bar very high — the people there are exceptional)

  • Weather shifts quickly — humid, wet, windy, then sunny again

None of these are dealbreakers — just realities.

PhĂș Quốc isn’t a polished Bali or a serene Da Nang.
It’s a growing island trying to balance opportunity with identity.

And honestly?
We’re cheering them on.

⭐ Yes
We Did the Famous Starfish Beach

Everyone on social media has an opinion about Starfish Beach.
Some show crystal-clear water with starfish everywhere.
Others show disappointment.

We’ll save our full story for our dedicated blog,
👉 "Starfish Beach: Expectations vs Reality"

but let’s just say social media is 50/50
 for a reason.

đŸ›ïž The Silk Bedding Detour (We Chose Red!)

On the way across the island, we toured a silk bedding shop — and honestly, it was one of the highlights.

  • We learned how silk is processed

  • Felt every fabric

  • Saw the quality up close

  • And yes
 we chose Red

No regrets.
We even made a vlog about it — catch it HERE.

⛓ The PhĂș Quốc Prison (50 Years Later)

This place deserves its own blog — and it will have one.
👉 "PhĂș Quốc Prison: 50 Years Later"

But here’s what we can say:

As Americans living in Vietnam, walking into a former wartime prison is emotional, complex, and humbling.
You face the brutal realities of a war that ended just over 50 years ago — a war that shaped generations on both sides.

It’s painful.
It’s important.
And it changes you a little.

đŸ‘šâ€đŸ‘©â€đŸ‘§â€đŸ‘Š Final Thoughts

PhĂș Quốc truly has a lot to offer, especially for families:

  • Safari

  • Beaches

  • Grand World

  • Cable car to the waterpark

  • Resorts everywhere

  • Affordable activities

  • A totally different pace than mainland Vietnam

And while seasoned Asia travelers may notice the higher prices, the construction, and the transitional stage the island is in — it’s still a place full of potential and beauty.

Paradise doesn’t have to be perfect to be worth visiting.

Tip or Trick

If you’re heading to PhĂș Quốc:

  • Choose your location carefully. The island is larger than you think.

  • Expect resort-level prices — higher than Da Nang or Hanoi, but lower than similar destinations outside Asia.

  • Plan 3–5 key experiences and leave the rest open — the island shines when you explore slowly.

  • Be patient with the growth. Tourism is new here, and they’re navigating it the best they can.

Watch the Story

While we didn’t film a full vlog for this trip, you can dive deeper into the places and moments we mentioned throughout this post. Each of these stories adds another layer to understanding PhĂș Quốc — the beauty, the history, and the reality behind the island.
