Egnatia: The Best Meal We've Had in Albania
Egnatia: The Best Meal We've Had in Albania.
A little way out of Fier, tucked into grounds that look styled for a magazine shoot, we found the restaurant we now measure every other Albanian meal against. Here's why Egnatia earns a straight ten from us.
We've eaten our way across a lot of countries as a family — Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and now Albania — so when I say a place is a 10 out of 10, I don't mean it lightly. Egnatia earned it on the first visit and hasn't slipped since.
It sits a bit outside the center of Fier, and that distance is part of the magic. You leave the everyday bustle of town behind, and by the time you pull up, you're somewhere that feels deliberately, beautifully removed. The grounds are picture perfect — the kind of setting where you find yourself taking photos before you've even sat down.
The setting does half the work.
Some restaurants are a room with food in it. Egnatia is a whole experience before your first bite. The grounds are gorgeous — thoughtfully kept, genuinely photogenic — and the ambience carries right through from the moment you arrive to the moment you reluctantly leave. It's the kind of place you'd choose for a slow, lingering evening, not a quick bite.
The food more than keeps up.
A beautiful setting can carry a mediocre kitchen for one visit. Egnatia doesn't need the crutch. The menu ranges from Albanian classics to Italian, and both are done well — this isn't a place that's great at one thing and phoning in the rest. And the portions are huge. Come hungry, and don't over-order, because what lands on your table is generous in a way that catches you off guard the first time.
Then there's the salad. Egnatia has a signature salad named after the restaurant itself, and I don't say this for effect: it is the best salad I have ever had. Not the best in Albania. The best, full stop. If you take one piece of advice from this whole review, order the Egnatia salad.
The service ties it all together.
Outstanding. That's the word. Attentive without hovering, warm without being performative — the kind of service that makes you feel looked after rather than processed. When the setting, the food, and the people taking care of you all hit at once, that's when a place stops being "a nice dinner" and becomes somewhere you tell people about. Egnatia is somewhere we tell people about.
Egnatia, Fier — the quick facts
We've made peace with the fact that we'll be back at Egnatia more than is strictly reasonable. When you find a place in your own town that gets everything right — the setting, the food, the people — you don't ration it. You go back, and you bring everyone you can.
If you're passing through Fier, or lucky enough to live nearby like we do, do yourself a favor. Make the little drive out of town. Order the salad. Stay for the evening.
